The Texas Catholic Historical Society has received three awards from the Catholic Press Association for the 2016 issue of Catholic Southwest: A Journal of History and Culture. Below are the awards the Society received with commentary by the Catholic Press Association.
MAGAZINE/NEWSLETTER OF THE YEAR: Scholarly Magazine
Catholic Southwest by Richard Fossey, Editor
Intriguing mix of topics, handled with scholarly rigor and ability. The introductory essay pulls together all the pieces. The publication is professional looking and its design and execution supports the impression of quality and authority. Small size of publication limits the number of articles but doesn't limit the quality of scholarship nor the professionalism of presentation. This publication follows standard scholarly publication format, spicing it up with photographs that add to the historical portraits.
BEST ESSAY ORIGINATING WITH A MAGAZINE OR NEWSLETTER: Scholarly Magazine
Catholic Southwest, “Judge Leander Perez and the Franciscans of Our Lady of Good Harbor: A School Integration Battle in Buras, Louisiana 1962-1965" by Fr. David J. Endres
Fine essay that recalls the details of a struggle we should not forget. Persuasive and moving.
